Fall Festival and Spring Festival Competitions

Fall Festival
(Revised in September 2025)

Guidelines for Fall Festival:
The theme for PIANO categories is rotate each year between Classical/Romantic/20th-21st Century: 
Classical: 2024, 2027,2030, etc.
Romantic & Impressionism: 2025, 2028, 2031, etc.
20th-21st Century: 2026, 2029, 2032, etc.

1. Students can choose to play any repertoire of one piece or multiple pieces if they are in the same collection by the same composer (for example, different pieces but within the same opus number), or a SINGLE MOVEMENT (Sonata).  Student who perform an arrangement or more than one movement of the Sonata will be disqualified from the competition.
Example of acceptable repertoire:
  • Arabesque No.1 and No.2 by Claude Debussy
  • Selections from Jazz, Rags, and Blue by Martha Mier

​2. For other instruments, students are allowed to play one piece or multiple pieces of ANY MUSICAL ERA if they are in the same collection by the same composer (for example, different pieces but within the same opus number), or a SINGLE MOVEMENT (Sonata). EXCEPT for pieces written by J.S. Bach.  All pieces must be published and available for purchase.
 
3. All music must be performed from memory. 
 
4. Students will be divided into 7 different categories, according to their AGE. 
  • Category I: 5-7 years old
  • Category II: 8-9 years old
  • Category III: 10-11 years old
  • Category IV: 12-13 years old
  • Category V: 14-15 years old
  • Category VI: 16-18 years old
  • Category VII: Adults
* Please note that the student’s age should be AS OF the Fall Festival Date
 
5. Time limit: 7 minutes
 
6 Application deadline is one month prior to the Festival date.
  
7. Application Fees:  $65 per participant
 
8. Applicant must be studying with a teacher who is currently a member of the Diamond Bar Branch, and the student must have studied with that teacher continuously for a minimum of 6 months, up until the date of the application deadline.  The teacher must be the one instructing the student at least 70% of the lesson time.
 
9. Students will get disqualified automatically should he or she violate any part of the festival rules. 
 
10. Maximum 7 students per teacher.

 * Judges’ decisions are final.
 
* All parts of the application form must be filled out entirely.  Application is considered INCOMPLETE and will NOT be processed unless both the application and payment is received by the deadline.  NO CHANGES will be allowed and NO REFUND will be issued once the application is submitted.

SPRING FESTIVAL

Guidelines for Spring Festival
1. Student can choose to play 
any repertoire of one piece or multiple pieces if they are in the same collection (for example, different pieces but within the same opus number), or SINGLE MOVEMENT (Sonata) from any period except the arrangements of ragtime, pop music or baroque pieces for the keyboard. A student who performs an arrangement or more than one movement of the Sonata will be disqualified from the competition.  Other instruments, students can play works from any music period, EXCEPT for works by J.S. Bach. All pieces must be published and available for purchase.
Example of acceptable repertoire:
  • Arabesque No.1 and No.2 by Claude Debussy
